Smith and Wesson Model 19 | Model 19 Smith & Wesson | S&W Model 19

The Smith & Wesson Model 19 is a revolver that the company manufactures and debuted on its K-frame in 1957. The Model 19 has a .357 Magnum chamber. The Smith & Wesson Model 27’s original N-frame .357 is slightly larger and heavier than the K-frame. The Smith & Wesson Model 66 is a stainless steel version of the Model 19 that was released in 1971.

The revolvers in the Smith & Wesson Classics range look and feel like vintage models while being upgraded with contemporary internal parts. The Model 19 Classic has a 4.25″ barrel, a stylish set of walnut grips, a black adjustable rear sight, and red ramp front sights. The revolver has a classical thumbpiece, a finely polished, blued finish, and a timeless appearance.

Smith & Wesson Model 19 HISTORY

The earliest “magnum” pistol cartridge is the .357 Magnum. The cartridge and revolver that went with it were developed and were successful in large part thanks to Smith & Wesson. Its invention is attributed to firearms author and experimenter Philip Sharpe, who did it in the 1930s when law enforcement organizations requested a more potent round. Douglas B. Wesson, a manufacturer for S&W, promised to create a new revolver that could handle “high-intensity” fire .38 Special loads would only be available if Winchester created a new cartridge.

Elmer Keith, a well-known author and wildcatcher at the time, experimented with hand loading .38 Special ammunition beyond their original specifications in order to take advantage of the newer and better designed firearm frames and metallurgy.

Elmer Keith also had a significant impact on the creation of the .357 Magnum. The first revolvers (known as ” .357 Magnum Models”) were finished by S&W on April 8, 1935. Winchester introduced the .357 Magnum, which was dimensionally identical to the .38 Special save for a.125 inch longer case.

Bill Jordan, a well-known gunfighter and renowned author on weapons and shooting techniques, retired assistant chief patrol inspector of the U.S. Border Patrol, advised Smith & Wesson on the features and design of the Model 19. Jordan envisioned a heavy-barreled four-inch K-Frame .357 Magnum sidearm with adjustable sights and a shrouded barrel similar to the huge N-frame .357 as the “peace officer’s dream” sidearm. The.357 Combat Magnum (later known as Model 19) was created after a year of testing using stronger steels and unique heat-treating techniques. On November 15, 1955, Jordan received the first serial-number gun (K260,000).

Up until both organizations adopted, uniformed officers of the previous U.S. Immigration and Naturalization Service and Patrol Agents of the U.S. Border Patrol received the .357 Magnum, four-inch barreled type as regular issue. Semi-automatic pistols with a 40 caliber.

For the French GIGN, a rare S&W M19-3 was created. They purchased 500 of these revolvers with serial numbers between D639300 and 639800 in 1972. The rarest M19 variant was produced in a limited quantity of 500 guns. [Reference needed]This particular type 19-3 is pinned & recessed and has a fixed sight. Its barrel measures three inches.

Model 19 Smith and Wesson STYLES

The Model 19 was made from blued carbon steel or nickel-plated steel, and it came with wood or rubber battle grips, an adjustable rear sight, a full-target or semi-target hammer, a serrated broad target trigger or a combat-type trigger, and barrel lengths of 2.5″ (3″: Model 66—rare). 30.5 ounces, 36 ounces, and 39 ounces, respectively, are the weights. The butts on the 2.5- and 3-inch barrel versions were round, while those on the other types were square.

From 1957 (the first model number stampings) to November 1999, the Model 19 was manufactured. 1970 until 2005 saw the production of the Model 66. The use of stainless steel and the Model 66’s smooth target-style trigger set it apart. The California Highway Patrol and the Los Angeles Police Department received the Model 68, a limited-edition variant of the Model 66 with a 6″ barrel and a .38 Special chambering.

The trigger options were the same for the Model 19 and Model 66. The 2.5″ Model 19-5, which was specially ordered under SKU #100701 as the regular issue sidearm for Special Agents of the US Department of State’s Diplomatic Security Service, was one of the last varieties of the Model 19 issued for police use.

This type has Pachmayr Professional Compac rubber grips, a.400″ wide, smooth “combat” trigger, and—most notably—a matte black finish as opposed to the usual high-polished blue. Up until the middle of the 1990s, when the agency decided to make a .40 caliber semi-automatic pistol its standard issue sidearm, I&NS Special Agents carried the 2.5″ barreled Model 66.
